TMJ Pain Relief
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain relief at Stones Corner Dental focuses on relaxing the jaw muscles as an alternative to jaw surgery.
And we’ve found that this non-invasive approach works for most of our patients with mild to moderate temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). They experience elimination or reduction of pain and improved temporomandibular joint function.
Because TMJ syndrome isn’t down to a single cause, there’s no one standalone treatment for TMD.
If a jaw disorder is related to misalignment, it can in most cases be treated effectively with a range of non-surgical therapies. These treatments not only ease symptoms but also improve bite function and enhance your smile.
What is TMD?
The temporomandibular joint has a lot of work to do to enable the upper jaw to close on the lower jaw. Problems arise when the jaw joints stop functioning correctly with jaw muscles.
Medical professionals regard TMD as a group of symptoms that occur together, as opposed to a single condition, and it’s thought to be caused by multiple factors.
Symptoms of TMJ disorder
The most common symptom of TMD is pain, which may be mistaken for other problems. TMJ issues can cause:
• Muscle pain in the face, neck or shoulders
• Muscle spasms in the jaw
• Discomfort when eating
• Toothache-type pain
• Pain when yawning
• Headaches
• Earache

Non-surgical TMD treatments
A common method of treating TMD is with a customised oral appliance – a bite guard or dental splint – similar to those used to counter the effects of bruxism. These appliances prevent upper and lower teeth from grinding together.
Botox injections – also used for anti-wrinkle treatment – can also ease TMJ discomfort by relaxing jaw muscles.
Other non-surgical measures to help alleviate TMJ pain may include:
• Relaxation techniques to ease jaw tension
• Physiotherapy to strengthen jaw muscles and improve flexibility and range of motion
• Myofunctional therapy to resolve issues with facial muscles
• Over-the-counter medication such as aspirin or another anti-inflammatory drug
• Prescription medication such as muscle relaxants, nerve pain drugs, or injectable steroids
